The Stage

The howling eyes forecast the plainest heart

And I forget my chivalry monsoon.

Crippled meaning of my brittle bravery

Shrinks cowardly with every balding noon.

I creep under lost victory

To hear bitter beats of drumming theft.

Throughout my courage traffic changes lanes

If I forget which role I left.

The mass of the self never ends . . .

Shall I put on the mask to complete the face?

All of a sudden on a stage of words

The meaning becomes just a dress in lace . . .

Lusterless gazes beat like weakened wings

Against the pillow curtains of a pulpit dump.

The rhythm of the chaos lacerates aroma

Till it becomes a fragrance stump . . .

The fresh cut could still be smelled—

But the profile of the sound hides like a fraud.

In front of lenses—the close-up of the rouge

The flatter still pretending to applaud

The drama map reveals how long I will spin

On a blank canvas of the stage like dice.

As I drill the brush into the sketch, I drizzle

And my dew veil covers the coconut eyes . . .

I bolt my fingers into the lame horizon of the audience

Where ovation changes like an illusionist’s hand

I mime around until I smell the tangled hair

All pulled into the theater fan.

Am I landing on a stepping pedestal of mystery

Where truth with frosted hair dives blue face down?

The wrinkles show up with each flicker of the candle—

If I left them for God—am I too young to be found?
